I really enjoyed judging this splendid entry of 24 hounds & my grateful thanks to the committee of Leeds for the kind invitation. More so, special thanks to the exhibitors for such a superb entry with only two absentees. I had a wonderful afternoon with you all, and I thought the quality was really good – with plenty of hounds to whom I would have been very happy to award a CC or ResCC.
SBD/B (1 Entries) Abs: 0
1st) PICKERING, Miss Hannah Frances Rose & LEE, Mr Jake Ottaryx Apple *, BSBIB; this B/T bitch has much to admire in terms of shape and size; correct shape to skull and a strong, deep muzzle with an excellent nose. Eye colour a bit light I felt. Good ears of correct length. Well boned & she has good feet, and she is quite athletic on the move, even if she does move a touch closer behind than ideal.
JD (1 Entries) Abs: 0
1st) LEREGO, Miss Maria Teckelgarth Musket*, loved this young B/T hound and I really felt he was something special. I knew I would have had a CC winner had nothing else I liked appeared in the later classes, which is always a good feeling in the second class of the breed! Excellent houndy head and expression, very good balance to skull and muzzle, super nose & eyes tidy enough. He has very good ears with good fold, which was not always evident in the entry. Long, powerful neck into strong shoulders. Very well balanced in body. A lovely mover from all angles, with a long, easy stride. Large, thick webbed feet & used his stern well. Ultimately, he was beaten for the CC and ResCC by two older hounds, but this one is certainly a Champion in the making.
PGD (2 Entries) Abs: 1
1st) CLARK, Mr S & ASHWORTH, Mrs Judith & ATTER, Mr Joh Skarabrae & Avitar’s A Rhapsody In Blue Via Kingstree (IMP), B/T hound and another who is in the teenage stage. I liked him very much and he appears very workmanlike in his outlook. Typical head and expression, and another with good ears. Well made through the front and body, firm topline and very good hindquarters & uses himself particularly well on the move. Good oily texture in his coat, and he was very well handled.
LD (2 Entries) Abs: 0
1st) LEREGO, Miss Maria Teckelgarth Mahler*, B/T litter brother to Musket & at the risk of repeating myself, another hound that I particularly liked and thought was very impressive. In a breed where the entries are not particularly big generally, it is incredible to find so many good hounds; such must be the work and dedication of the breeders. I thought this hound had an excellent head and really good ears, long and folded; beautiful big nosepad and excellent balance to his skull and foreface. Well balanced in body and very athletic on the move, super big, thick feet. A change of handler in the challenge ensured he had more fun than he otherwise might have; but another who looks as though his future is assured.
2nd) LEWIS, Mrs Samantha Olphae Governor (JW), I have judged this young B/T dog before and I believe I have him a stakes class at an Open Show. Just over his second birthday, I liked him then and I still like him now. He is perhaps not as substantial as Mahler, but he is not weedy. He has a very good head and eye, even if his ears are perhaps not as long as Mahler’s. Very well made in body, he has an excellent topline, and his feet are of a fairly good size. Correctly textured coat and a very nice hound.
OD (2 Entries) Abs: 0
1st) LEREGO, Miss Maria & SALT, Dr David & STRINGER, Pr Ch Teckelgarth Ingot, DCC & BOS. An impressive red grizzle dog, with an excellent outline when standing. He has plenty of leg and covers the ground with ease. He has a typical head of excellent length, aided by very good ears, for length and also with a good fold. His long neck flows smoothly into beautiful shoulders. He boasts correct angulation at both the front and rear, with a firm topline and a typical coat with a degree of oiliness. He has large, thick, well-webbed feet. Not the easiest dog to move I imagine, as he can settle into a sedate action and is not often co-operative to come out of it. When he wants to move at his truest, he is sound, efficient, and covers the ground well, even if his tail sometimes is not used as much as he might otherwise decide to. A lovely chap, beaten by the fresher LB for BOB.
2nd) PORTER, Mrs Sara & PORTER, Mr David Ottaryx Vandal **, no denying the sex of this B/T hound, he is very masculine throughout. He has a good head and eye, is perhaps a mite broader in skull than ideal. Enough neck and fairly good shoulders, excellent bone and body; and another with very good, large feet. Lovely colour & a sound, efficient mover from all angles.
VD (1 Entries) Abs: 0
1st) LEWIS, Mrs Samantha Ch Olphae Charman (vw)**, RCC, BV & Veteran Group 3; this B/T is a dog who impresses tremendously on the move. Typical head of good length, with lovely ears. Strong and well built in front; and through the ribs and topline. Could perhaps have a little more angulation behind, but he is a very functional and fit mover, a credit to his owner/breeder. Very pleased to see him win VG3 later in the day, a boon for the breed.
JB (1 Entries) Abs: 0
1st) LEREGO, Miss Maria Teckelgarth Nesta (ai) NAF, only just over a year old; this is a very smart B/T bitch with a lot going for her, even at this tender age. Her head and eye are typical and well balanced, even if her ears could be a mite longer. Well-made in neck, strong & goes into clean, well angulated shoulders. Good chest and ribbing; still a little chubby & this showed on the move. Used herself well and she is a powerhouse, with a particularly athletic stride in profile. Big feet & clearly functional.
PGB (3 Entries) Abs: 1
1st) PORTER, Mrs Sara & PORTER, Mr David Ottaryx Wicket**, B/T bitch of just over 3 years old. She has a good head and eye, even if I might prefer a little more strength; enough neck and fairly well laid shoulders. She is well boned, well ribbed back and has enough hind angulation, but she does move just a little closer behind than ideal. She is a very typical hound and carries herself well from all angles, using her stern as she goes.
2nd) LEREGO, Miss Maria & DICKSON, Mr R & DICKSON, Mrs Teckelgarth Kiss Me Kate, 6 months or thereabouts younger than the winner; a very nice B/T bitch & I see she is sired by the DCC winner. She has a good head and eye, perhaps even better ears than the winner. Not a lot of difference between them in body or outline at this stage. Kiss Me Kate didn’t quite have the verve moving of the winner, today & so she paid the price, but a good hound with a lot to like about her.
LB (2 Entries) Abs: 0
1st) LEREGO, Miss Maria Teckelgarth Manon*, BCC & BOB; B/T bitch of 15 months & the one that conquered all today. I thought she was just lovely, she has strength to her head, well balanced muzzle and skull; lovely ears of correct length with fold and a big nose. She is feminine throughout, but well boned and has a good neck and shoulder; moderate chest & good return of upperarm. Very good topline and moderate angulation behind. I thought she looked as though she could go all day from the side, using her stern well and with big, easy strides. In excellent coat, with clearly a marked degree of oiliness. She is very good coming and going, and a very athletic animal from all angles. Super big, webbed feet. Quite something I felt. CC & BOB and gave a very good account of herself in the group.
2nd) PORTER, Mrs Sara & PORTER, Mr David Ottaryx Chaos (ai) JW, this is also a lovely B/T bitch and one I would also think is Champion quality. She has excellent type & is a very athletic mover from the side. Her head and eye are very typical, and she is quite expressive; even if I felt the winner had the edge there today. She is balanced at both ends and this shows on the move, where she goes with an easy action; but she had a hard time to match the profile movement of the winner today. Most typical with lots of promise.
OB (6 Entries) Abs: 0
1st) LEREGO, Miss Maria Teckelgarth Kalliope, a really good class and a pleasure to judge. This 2 year old red grizzle bitch came out triumphant & I felt she was quite similar in all respects to the LB winner. I see she is sired by the DCC winner and she is almost the feminine form of him; a really lovely headed hound, super ears & head type, lovely strong neck and good shoulders, well boned and big, thick feet with webbing. Excellent topline & uses her stern well on the move, balanced angulation behind. I thought she would be the one to watch in the challenge, but Manon stepped it up a gear & continued to go in a foot perfect fashion, so Kalliope had to settle for the ResBCC; a very nice hound and clearly on her way to her title.
2nd) LEWIS, Mrs Samantha Ch Olphae Orlaith (ai), not at all surprised to see this B/T is a Ch, lovely colour and in super body and condition. Really liked her head and eye, lovely through the neck and shoulder, excellent feet, well ribbed back and she has a very good topline. Really sound and functional; close up to the winner & a delight to judge her.
3rd) PORTER, Mrs Sara & PORTER, Mr David Ironquest’s First In All Things At Ottaryx (Imp USA)
VB (3 Entries) Abs: 0
1st) LEREGO, Miss Maria Ch Teckelgarth Ebony, headed a class of three lovely girls. This one is a smashing B/T bitch; delightful, feminine head, with long and folded ears. Lovely expression, well set neck, running into good shoulders and a strong topline. Plenty of coat, and she is well angulated at both ends. Big and webbed feet, and I really liked her a lot. Close up to the main awards and also only beaten for BV but the RDCC winner.
2nd) PORTER, Mrs Sara & PORTER, Mr David Ottaryx Quinevere VW, I liked this B/T bitch a lot; and I thought she was feminine and attractive; although she didn’t have the substance of the winner. Good head and expression, well set ears and a good length of neck. Strong topline with enough angulation at both ends, she is a good, athletic mover, but I felt wasn’t quite covering the ground as easily as the winner today. I have judged her before and liked her then, and I still liked her today.
3rd) WHEATLEY, Mrs Caroline Ch Teckelgarth Zsa Zsa, completed a trio of beauties.
